Electrostatics Story Board Exploration

Procedure:

  1. Sketch out each of the three story boards for both a negatively charging object and a positively charging object.
  2. When charge is transferred, show the direction with an arrow and charge symbol
  3. It is a very good idea to use colored pencils for your drawings
  4. When you are done you will have 6 unique story boards.

Resource:

Flash player animations of charging

Questions:

  1. Charge separation: what moves, protons or electrons, and in which direction?
  2. When charging by conduction what must occur between the charging and the charged object?
  3. When charging by induction, which is removed first? The ground or the charging object?
  4. State the resulting net charge of the electroscope for each story board
  5. How does the charge on the electroscope compare to the type of charge on the charging object for conduction, for induction?
  6. Are the charging of the electroscope permanent or temporary for conduction? for
    induction
