Cart on a ramp
Modeling motion using graphs utilizing data collection via labpro and analysis
using loggerpro. You have used this system in chemistry.
Follow in detail the directions in the handout. Your ultimate goal is to be
able to state the following relationships.
- position - time graph
- find the acceleration with a curve fit, position = do + vt + 1/2at2
- velocity - time graph
- Find the acceleration with a curve fit, velocity = vo + at
- acceleration - time graph
- find the acceleration with a statistical analysis
Do the preliminary questions before you start the lab.
Setup:
- Connect all probes to Labpro and computer BEFORE starting the loggerpro
software.
- OPEN File, “02 cart”
- Now, Insert -> Graph (A acceleration
vs time graph appears.)
- CRTL-R To auto arrange all the graphs.
Collect data:
- Note that there is a dead zone of about 30 cm in front of the motion detector,
if the cart moves into this area, you will not get data. This will show up
as a flat line.
- Too clean up your graphs click on the graphs and CTRL-J to auto scale the
graphs
- Print out the graphs, Select, page 1 of 1 only and print copies for each
lab partner.
The acceleration graph needs to be manually scaled, right-click on the graph,
select "graph options" then the "Axis options" tab
Write up
- Activity type write up
- Add a cover page
- When referring to a graph please specifically state what it is that you
want the reader to note, don't simply state "look at graph"
- Label and answer each activity question.
- Give specific evidential support for your statements.
- i.e. "As seen by,.. in the a - t graph, etc.
- When answering questions that call
for a comparison please include the numbers and the difference, look for
some mathematical relationship and state it.
Additional question
Go back to your preliminary questions and comment on them. Were you
correct? How has your view of motion changed?
